This First steps course is comprised of lectures and seminars with case based discussions.  We will start with a step by step approach to getting the best out of your exploratory laparotomy and then discuss biopsy techniques. One session will go over diagnostic imaging of the abdomen – “How do I tell if this is surgical?”. We will also go through top tips for performing common surgical procedures, including gastropexy, intestinal resection and anastomosis, splenectomy, cystotomy and pyometra.

Learning objectives

  • To be familiar with the routine procedure for a thorough exploratory laparotomy
  • To be familiar with common biopsy tecniques performed during exploratory laparotomy and understand their risks and limitations
  • To recognise the diagnostic imaging finding that may dictate that exploratory laparotomy is necessary
  • To be familiar with the tecniques for performing common procedures
