About the course

This presentation will cover the basic physiology of pain to enhance your understanding of how and why pain occurs, and the effect of analgesia in the peri- and post-operative period. The basic physiology of pain will include the pain pathway, starting from a stimulus to perception in the brain. This will lead the presentation into discussing multi-modal analgesia. This will then include discussion of drug classifications and their effect on the pain pathway, including the benefits seen during the peri- and post-operative period. The presentation will then conclude with a summary.

Topics will include:

  • Physiology of pain
  • Pain pathway
  • Pre-emptive and multi modal approach to analgesia
  • The effect of analgesia on anaesthesia.
