The priorities for emergency patients are somewhat different to the routine non-emergency cases, and cats in particular can be even more vulnerable and easier to ‘tip over the edge’ when very sick. In this series we will review some of the core principles of the approach to the feline emergency patient including major body system examination, shock, indications for and use of fluid therapy, analgesia and oxygen therapy, before applying these to real cases that are frequently seen, such as RTAs and tomcat urethral obstruction.

Topics to be covered include:

  • Review of approach to emergency feline patients
  • Application of ECC fundamentals using real case examples
  • An overview of the most common feline poisons
