Scale the Heights - Basic Reptile Medicine for the GP Vet


This practical hands-on day course will focus on the basic need-to-knows of reptile medicine. The course will provide an overview of husbandry, clinic requirements, and the clinical skills required to ensure you meet day 1 skills in dealing with the most commonly seen reptiles – Mediterranean tortoises, Bearded dragons, and Royal pythons. Common diseases will also be covered, with a focus on infectious disease.

Topics to be covered include:

·         Biology and husbandry

·         Hospitalisation needs

·         Handling and examination techniques

·         Sampling and clinical pathology

·         Anaesthesia, imaging and surgery

·         Infectious diseases and common medical problems

·         Therapeutics

Learning Objectives:

·         Day 1 skills for Royal pythons, Mediterranean tortoises, and Bearded Dragons

·         Biology and husbandry of these species

·         Clinical skills and understanding to enable diagnosis and therapy of the most common conditions of these species

Required delegate attributes:

This course is designed for veterinary surgeons with all levels of experience. It will provide a basic level of knowledge for those interested in making a start in the exotics’ field as well as practitioners less interested, but still encountering these commonly kept species
