Day 1

 

Introduction to cats

  • What is a cat and what makes them and their carers different: an introduction to feline anatomy, physiology, behaviour and cat owners
  • Cat friendliness: what does this mean, how can I achieve this
  • How to take a behavioural history
  • Doing a home visit for a behaviour consult
  • Case studies

Day 2 

 

Feline behaviour and the role it plays in feline medicine cases + Feline urinary medicine

  • Common behavioural problems in cats, approach to diagnosis and management
    -House soiling (including behaviourists approach to inappropriate urination)
    -Conflict between cats
    -Night time vocalisation
    -Attention seeking behaviour
    -Unusual behaviour eg wool chewing
  • Approach to diagnosis of LUTD in cats
  • Management of FIC
  • Cases

Day 3

Urinary and renal medicine

  • Management of non idiopathic FLUTD: lower urinary tract urolithiasis, neoplasia, incontinence, when to refer
  • Urinalysis – limitations of different assessment methods/techniques
  • Diagnosing and staging renal disease – what assessment is needed
  • Optimum management of chronic kidney disease
  • Case studies

Day 4

Preventative medicine and senior cat medicine

  • Early diagnosis of disease: what, why and how?
  • Osteoarthritis recognition and management
  • Weight loss in the absence of clinical signs/physical abnormalities
  • Cognitive dysfunction syndrome recognition and management
  • Case studies

Day 5

Endocrinology

  • Hyperthyroidism – diagnosis, treatment, challenges and solutions
  • Diabetes mellitus in cats
  • Systemic hypertension – diagnosis and management
  • Less frequently encountered feline endocrinopathies: hyperaldosteronism, Acromegaly, etc
  • Case studies
