About the course

Pre and Post Operative Nursing Considerations for Specific Surgical Cases

Surgical nursing can be extremely rewarding and having a better understanding of the surgical procedures we are dealing with allows us to implement specific nursing care that can help the patient throughout the whole perioperative period.

In this course, we will start from the very beginning – looking at how to gain relevant information at admit, how extra details and consideration of the patients handling and environment can aid in reducing pre-and post-operative stress. We will discuss the preparation of the surgical suite and surgical team and how this can have an impact on patient outcome before we look at nursing considerations for some of the more common surgical cases we see in practice.

Specific surgical cases to be discussed:

  • Nursing considerations for the fracture patient
  • Nursing considerations for the blocked bladder patient
  • Nursing considerations for the c-section
  • Nursing considerations for the surgical spinal patient
  • How to deal with acute surgical blood loss
  • Implementation of post-operative pain scoring in the surgical patient
  • Optimising post op care and discharge
